Good Designers Complete, Great Designers Discard

Recently while redesigning Z-Up (It’s still a mess), I realized halfway through the process that my design didn’t fit the branding of it at all. See, for Z-Up, I used the whole cardboard box metaphor, representing the files that one can upload onto it. For my “redesign” of it, I started going for the whole airmail envelope look, with the diagonal stripes on the borders. Yes it looked pretty, but I soon realized that it just did not go with the branding I had established for Z-Up. It was poorly thought out, and done on a whim, with little thought to how well it works for the brand.

Outdated But Still Effective

I used to wonder who in the world still used Windows DOS anymore. Well in my past and current jobs I’ve seen it being used in a number of places where you wouldn’t expect to see it. It’s used in McDonald’s and Burger King, as well as for telemarketing. In fast food places, the cash registers and order screens are all based on it. In telemarketing, DOS is used to display the scripts as well as for inputting information. At first I was struck by the thought “wow this shit’s outdated…”

If You Have A DSLR…

A good idea would be to set the mode to automatic when you let a friend use the camera. Sure you might know how to work the camera and all of its elite features, but not everybody does. I came upon this conclusion when I was looking through my camera’s memory card earlier today. Out of 136 pictures, about 50 came out decent, and those were the ones I took. It’s a small tip, but it could save potentially photo-worthy moments from being ruined by a technically inept friend.

Thoughts On The iPad

Apple iPad

Apple finally announced the iPad today which is great and all, but the best thing about it is the end of all those rumors that have been littering my RSS subscriptions. After looking around the blogs that were lucky enough to get a hands-on, here are my thoughts on the iPad.

Hacking, Really?

Over the past few years I’ve seen/heard people throw the word “hacking” around everywhere, even in situations where it’s not even appropriate. A lot of people do it to feel better about their technological skill- “Oh my account got hacked” vs. “I put a weak password and somebody guessed it.”

Snow Leopard

DSC_5224, originally uploaded by daniel.zabolotny.

Yesterday I was at the Apple Store in Chelsea and I saw the Snow Leopard box on the shelf. “It’s been long enough,” I thought to myself as I picked it up. Fast-forward a couple hours, and I’ve already gotten it running on my MacBook Pro. The installation was a piece of cake, and since I waited a while, most of the initial bugs have been smoothed out by 10.6.2. I reclaimed a sizable portion of my HDD and my computer’s been running a bit quicker. The dashboard is actually usable now, whereas before it would lag and take a while to load. Overall, I’m happy with the upgrade— it was thirty dollars well spent.
