WordPress 2.7 UI Reviewed

Well, I’ve gotten my hands on WordPress 2.7. I’ve installed it (it was quick and painless, but that’s to be expected from WordPress), and dug around through the new UI. The new admin UI is kind of cluttered, with unnecessary icons strewn about. Although compared to the older 2.5 UI, it looks much more polished. The new navbar is an improvement in usability, with sub-sections visible without having to reload the page. While white and gray might not seem like a very exciting color scheme, the folks at WordPress managed to pull it off quite nicely, with some elegant blue and orange touches here and there. CSS3 is used, but not overused. The basic buttons have become more rounded, and look like less shiny versions of the basic Mac OS X buttons. The dashboard panels can be rearranged simply by dragging, which is a nice touch. The navbar can also be collapsed to save screen area, with only the icons visible. Typography is used in an elegant fashion, with both sans-serif and serif fonts. The “new post” button is now conveniently located on the top, and appears on all pages. The WYSIWYG writer has been cleaned up some, and the HTML view has been polished some more. The panels in the writer can also be rearranged. Screenshots are below:

On overall, the new UI is more polished, improved in terms of usability, and prettier. While it isn’t as simplistic as I’d like it to be, I think that it will appeal to most WordPress users. Now if only they’d update WordPress’ default theme.

Even though I don’t use WordPress anymore, I still recommend it to anybody interested in blogging.

WordPress 2.7

WordPress 2.7 has finally been released! Even though I’m not a WordPress user anymore, it’s still interesting to see what they’ve whipped up this time. I’ve installed 2.7 on another directory and will be posting a review shortly, after I get to pick around the new admin UI. From what I’ve seen so far, my initial reactions are not very positive…

RIP Pownce

Today I received a very saddening e-mail. It was from Pownce, which is was a really nice Twitter alternative, with a nicer UI and better uptimes. Turns out Pownce is being shut down after being bought over by SixApart (the makers of Movable Type). Pownce, you were a great friend, and will be missed.

On a brighter note, since it’s officially December, I can start decorating for Christmas. Expect some small decorations on this blog sometime this week.

‘Tis the Season

Well now that Thanksgiving has passed, it’s all about Christmas now. The SAT draws closer and closer, and my grades in school are mostly good. I’ve gone back to using Flash CS3 and Photoshop CS3. Flash CS4 has a few things that are quite annoying, including: forgetting my keyboard shortcuts, subpar fit & finish, and an annoying UI. The first one might be only on my system, but the other two are probably not. There are some inconsistencies in the UI, and the whole press and drag value boxes are quite annoying. You have to click on them straight, and not move the mouse in any direction, lest you alter the value. It can make accuracy a very difficult thing to achieve. However I’m still keeping Illustrator CS4, because it actually has some good new features.

I sure hope it snows for Christmas.

New Keyboard!

Today I went out and got myself a nice new Apple keyboard.

It’s a really nice keyboard, and it’s a joy to type on. If only all keyboards were as well made and attractive as this one. I’ve also made some small typographic tweaks to the layout, and I finally finished the footer, with a Flickr feed and all. I also added “frames” for all the pictures, to make them look nicer.

In other news, through years and years of experience I have concluded that turkey is just a drier, tasteless version of chicken. That is all.
